When a person dies, does his/her spirit stay with us?
As a Christian, I'm not sure if it's right to believe that after someone I care about (a friend or a mentor in the faith) passes on, that his/her spirit is still with me, helping me. What does the Bible say about this?

Ecc. 12.6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. When we die, we go straight back to God. There is no in between for us. Once we lay this earth-suit down, we have to go back to God. Paul also knew that he wanted to go home to Christ, but he also wanted to stay with his people, helping them mature and grow. He knew, he had only two places to live--one was earth, one was heaven. 2 Cor. 5.8

Scripture can provide you the answer that hopefully helps and comforts you. In 1Thess 13-18 Paul tells us that those who have died in Christ before He comes for those of us still alive, will be with Him. Their bodies rise and rejoin their Spirits, and then those alive rise to join them. And the same Paul said to be "absent in the body is to be present with the Lord."
