There are two major points.

First, as Lord of the Sabbath He is revealing His identity as God.

'And He said to them, 'The Sabbath WAS made for man, and not man for the Sabbath'. Mark 2:27

Jesus was pointing back to Creation week, when He as Creator blessed and sanctified the Sabbath Day'. Genesis 2:3

He said 'Therefore the Son of Man IS also 'Lord of the Sabbath' meaning it has not been done away with. Mark 2:27
Jesus was, He is, and He will always be 'Lord of the Sabbath' Isaiah 66:23

Jesus said "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill". Matthew 5:17

The word fulfill is 'pleroo' in Greek which means to bring to a realisation or completeness.

How does Jesus help us to realise the true meaning of the Sabbath Day?

The pharisees had made it a burden because of their many laws. They were so focused on themselves they did not understand or appreciate when Jesus reached out to heal people.

But Jesus gave us principles to live by. And when Abiathar the High Priest gave David the showbread when he and his companions were hungry he was doing what God intends for us to do: To help those in need.

Jesus did heal many on the Sabbath and He was also revealing the nature of His mission.

'Then He said to them, "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out?

Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? 

"Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath" Matthew 12:11-12
