Salt (Lev. 2:13; Num. 18:19).

A covenant made with Israel concerning the sacrifices they were to offer forever.

See usage of salt in Mk. 9:49,50; and Col. 4:6.

In Palestine and surrounding countries salt was used in making covenants. If people dined together on food with salt in it, they became friends, though they may have been enemies before. The Arab expression, "There is salt between us," or "He has eaten of my salt," means partaking of the hospitality which cements friendship. Covenants were generally confirmed at sacrificial meals and salt was always present. The covenant of salt pictured the everlasting friendship between God and His people (Num. 18:19).

Numbers 18:19 (KJV)19 All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.

[covenant of salt]
Since it was scarce, salt was precious. It was used in every sacrifice (Lev. 2:13) as well as to preserve meat, and it became the symbol of the incorruptibility of God's covenant, and of man's perpetual obligation to Him. "A covenant of salt" referred to any inviolable covenant.

Leviticus 2:13 (KJV) And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

Jos 9:14
And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

1. They ate with the Gibeonites. According to ancient custom, eating together was a token of unalterable friendship, and those who ate salt together were bound to a perpetual covenant.
So deeply rooted was this custom that intended robbery has been abandoned when a robber has accidently eaten salt while getting his plunder. Likewise, men have been freed from captivity by getting their captors to eat salt with them.

The Lord gave the kingdom to David forever by a covenant of salt

(Chronicles 13:5 (KJV) Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
