Notice the example of Jesus in offering himself as a sacrifice to God for us. Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. When we sacrifice time, energy, money, help, etc., to our brothers and sisters and neighbors that is well pleasing in the sight of God with whom we have to do. Php 4:18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. In this case the sacrifice was to help Paul in his ministry and as we help any one who ministers in the name of the lord Jesus such sacrifice is well pleasing to our God and Father. Heb 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. This of course we can do an a daily basis and it is our way of telling our God and Father how much we appreciate all that He has done for us, for all the long-suffering, patient, forgiving way he deals with us all the time. How much we appreciate His amazing grace towards us who deserve nothing, for there is nothing in our hands that we can bring that can earn us anything with God, it all in the lord Jesus that He is able to reconcile and give so generously to those who are in him. May we all realize the joy experienced in knowing all our sins have been put aside, that we have been pronounced not guilty before the throne of God and that we have been raised up with Jesus so that when God looks on Jesus as his right hand he sees us in him, and when He looks down on us from above He sees His beloved son in us. It is important to give thanks to God because God is great, mighty, powerful. He blesses our lives with many blessing. We ought to praise Him. Scripture has much to say on this. Nehemiah 12:46-47 Psalm 95:2-3 1 Corinthians 1:4-5 2 Corinthians 9:11-12 1 Chronicles 16:34 Psalm 7:17 Psalm 28:7 Psalm 100:4 Psalm 106:1 Colossians 3:17 1 Thessalonians 5:18 I could go on listing verses forever! Your next question should be: How can I incorporate giving thanks to God into my daily life? Of course, we are supposed to praise Him in our prayers. When Jesus taught us to pray (in Matthew 6), He began His prayer by lifting the Lord's name on high. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Many people like to keep thankfulness journals or thankfulness lists. You basically make a list of things you are thankful for each day. Personally, I keep a thankfulness box. I make a box out of carton and close it completely on all sides. I decorate it by gluing colored construction paper on it. I make a rectangle hole about 2 inches long at the top of the carton box. I use scissors to cut up sheets of construction paper into small squares than can fit in the hole. Each day I take one square of paper, write the thing I am most thankful for today on it, and slide it through the hole into the box. Everyday I get thinking of lots of things I am thankful for in order to chose the thing I am most thankful for.

Giving thanks to God for being, for doing, for creating, for giving, for providing, for protecting, for saving, for sending.... Hummmmmm... We each need to Praise The Lord with every fiber of our being that He first created us and that He sent His one and only begotten son to be our eternal sacrifice for the removal of our untold many sins, "for by His righteousness we have been redeemed unto the Father, for His Glory, Honor and Praise". --Andy--

Regarding 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Dr. James A. Borror, former founding pastor of Scottsdale Bible Church, which I attended when I lived in Arizona for 18 years, preached on the topic, "Thankfulness" as a guest speaker at a church in California. One of the things he said (and I agree) is that thanking God is good for us; that’s at least one reason it is so important. In his sermon, Dr. Borror tells the story, the true story, of Corrie ten Boom and her sister in a flea-infested concentration camp, I believe, in Germany. Corrie and Betsy, her sister, had hidden many Jews in the safety of their home for quite a while, but finally got caught. The 2 women had begun a Bible study among the other prisoners there in a really flea-infested part of the prison, which of course would not have been very pleasant, to say the least. But they ministered unmolested in that place! And then Corrie realized that the guards did not want to go down there with all those fleas! So it was for their protection, really. God always has our best interests at heart! If a bug flies onto and dies on our car front windshield, what do we see, the vast area of clear vision, or just the bug? The dead bug, right? That’s our natural tendency, but if we rely on God’s help, we don’t always have to see the seamy side of life, but the bright side.
