Are taking oaths in court and vows in marriage a violation of Jesus' command in Matthew 5:33-37?

NIV - 33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.' 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne.

No, taking an oath is a type of covenant making. Once you make covenant you are obligated to keep the covenant. When you sign papers on a car you are making an oath or vow to make the payments until the debt is fulfilled. God wants us to walk in freedom and if we are bound up in different covenants we are not necessarily free. Debt free is a good example because we have more money to spend or give or whatever we want to do with it. Just remember once you make an oath you need to stick to it unless the other allows you out of it. If the oath that was made is impossible to fulfill after you have been in it for a while then ask to be let off. If you are not allowed then trust God to help you fulfill it. He has always come through for me so He will for you.
