During the intimate conversation he had with his faithful disciples on the night of Nisan 14, Jesus likened himself to “the true vine,” in contrast with the ‘degenerate vine’ of unfaithful Israel. He said: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the cultivator.” (John 15:1) Centuries earlier, the prophet Jeremiah recorded these words of Jehovah to his renegade people: “I had planted you as a choice red vine . . . So how have you been changed toward me into the degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?” (Jeremiah 2:21) And the prophet Hosea wrote: “Israel is a degenerating vine. Fruit he keeps putting forth for himself. . . . Their heart has become hypocritical.”—Hosea 10:1, 2.

 Rather than producing the fruitage of true worship, Israel fell into apostasy and produced fruit for itself. Three days before his final meeting with his faithful disciples, Jesus told the hypocritical Jewish leaders: “I say to you, The kingdom of God will be taken from you and be given to a nation producing its fruits.” (Matthew 21:43) That new nation is “the Israel of God,” made up of 144,000 anointed Christians, who are likened to “the branches” of “the true vine,” Christ Jesus.—Galatians 6:16; John 15:5; Revelation 14:1, 3.

 Jesus told the 11 apostles present with him in that upper room: “Every branch in me not bearing fruit he takes away, and every one bearing fruit he cleans, that it may bear more fruit. Remain in union with me, and I in union with you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, in the same way neither can you, unless you remain in union with me.” (John 15:2, 4)

Judges Chapter 9;
8 “One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’ 
9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally all the trees said to the thorn bush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 “The thorn bush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thorn bush and consume the cedars of Lebanon

Here, trees means children of Israel they are seeking the King to rule over them but their behavior and attitudes are not pleased by God. They forsake the Lord God who delivered them from the hand of Pharaoh and planted them in the land of Canaan. They are worshiping false God and looking brighter side by calling good trees to rule over them. 

Children of Israel went out to Vine & said “come be our king” but the answer is “Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’

Yes vine will cheers both Gods and humans, in other words it will revive the spirit, it will give life to the dead. Please turn your Bible to 1st Samuel 30: 12 - here one person is half dead but he revived after taking two cluster of raisins (dried vine) another example we see in 2nd Samuel 16:2 – “The king (David) asked Ziba, “Why have you brought these?”
Ziba answered, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on, the bread and fruit are for the men to eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the wilderness.” 
Please underscore the last sentence that wine is to energize / restore those who become pale in the wilderness, the next step of the pale is death.

Talking spiritually, we can come to one conclusion that Vine is crucial / essential to the humans who is going to perish. Unless sufficient wine is not provided man will die.

Jesus Christ said, I am the True Vine, because the true vine is necessary to the mankind is under the shadow of death. To pull back from the dead vine is must. Hence Jesus said “ I am the True vine, 

One more instance in the Bible, in the city of Cana where Jesus turned water into wine. Mary asked Jesus to do something because they have no more wine. “Woman - Why do you involve me? Jesus replied “My hour has not yet come.” This means “No Wine” is not only limited to the city of Cana but also for the entire universe. The entire universe essentially required the wine. So Jesus said “My hour has not yet come.” Means the time for His crucification on the cross has not yet come. After crucified on the cross he made ready true vine for revival of entire universe.

The true vine (Jesus) brought true wine for revival of spirit to the entire universe, especially this vine brings reconciliation with God.

What Christ Is—The True God 1 John 5:20

3 He is ‘the true Bread’ John 6:32—Let us feast upon Him
4 He is ‘the true Vine’ John 15:1—Let us abide in Him 15:1 the true vine Jesus is likely referring to a grapevine. Jesus is the center of the Christian faith—He is the source of life and the way to eternal life (John 14:6). The word for ‘true’ (alêthinos) is remarkable: it means true as opposed to ‘spurious,’ not true as opposed to ‘lying.’ It is in fact the old English ‘very,’ e.g. ‘very God of very God’. Christ then is the true, the genuine, the perfect Light, just as He is ‘the perfect Bread’ (John 6:32) and ‘the perfect Vine’ (John 15:1): not that He is the only Light, and Bread, and Vine, but that He is in reality what all others are in figure and imperfectly. All words about truth are very characteristic of S. John.

He IS (PRESENT tense) the true vine. 

In the PAST Israel was the vine (Ps. 80:8, 14, 16; Isa. 5:1-7; Jer. 2:21; 6:9; Ezek. 15:1-2; 19:10-14. 

In the FUTURE, the Evil World System will be the vine (Rev. 14:17-20) -- a future vine, “the vine of the earth” described in Revelation 14:14–20. This is the Gentile world system ripening for God’s judgment. --(on the Evil World System, Rev. 14:17-20). Believers are branches in “the vine of heaven,” but the unsaved are branches in “the vine of the earth.” The unsaved depend on this world for their sustenance and satisfaction, while believers depend on Jesus Christ. The “vine of the earth” will be cut down and destroyed when Jesus Christ returns.
