They tried to hide from God among the trees of the garden. As if God, The Almighty and All Knowing, doesn't know where they are. It was a failed attempt.

Yet God asks, "Where are you?" not because he doesn't know, but because He is extracting a confession. Notice the next questions: 

1. Where are you?
2. Who told you that you were naked? 
3. Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?

Adam could have easily confessed to his own mistakes:

1. I am hiding.
2. I saw that I am naked.
3. Yes, I ate from that tree.

Instead, he passes the blame back to God! He said, "The woman YOU put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

Strange you ask "How...."

Clothing denotes status and authority, but it also provides something else here. Before, they were in blissful Communion, unselfconscious. After they became painfully self-aware. What would you do if you were walking in the park and suddenly became naked? How would I hide, or where? Why would I hide at all?
If for example I went for a swim and someone stole my clothes, I would be blissfully unaware that I was naked when in the water, which covers me. But when I came out, only then would I discover that I was naked, and become afraid of being seen. I can't stay in the water, but how to get home? For man, his home was the garden. Thats where God gave them to live, its where He brought Adam to from outside to perform the surgery to create Eve from one of his ribs and gave to them for their home. Now they were to be made homeless.

The statement that they became aware or knew they (were now, had become) naked implies that they were clothed earlier. It says elsewhere in the Bible about being clothed in Light, and this makes me think that God made us, not from the monkey model of evolution, but from the angel model of heavenly bodies, as finite creatures who had sophisticated skills of communication, intuition, and far more substance to us than the present wraith like mortality we inhabit. We know and think now in 3 dimensions but were probably created to know and live in more, probably the 10 dimensions we can discern from a careful reading of Genesis.
So to answer the question... Man before the Fall was never spoken of as Adam and Eve, wo-man was one person who communicated directly with God using senses that we still have but are dull and broken. Splendidly clothed in raiments of coloured light. The intuitive woman side of man simply wanted to be like the God whom he loved, much like some Jesus followers say they want to be like Him. She was beguiled by the visual appeal of the fruit of knowledge, probably without realising the consequences of gaining a conscience and the independence to decide for herself what is good (for her). Her beloved God knew what He liked and what displeased, so why shouldn't we decide for ourselves what is right and what is wrong for us? The male side of man was not deceived by the innocence and beauty of the fruit but was faced with losing this wonderful female, so he made the deliberate choice to join his woman half whom he loved so much and could not bear to be parted from. And the independence they chose separated them from the God they loved, not really able to hear Him any more, and shorn of their clothing. Suddenly naked, vulnerable, half deaf and blind, where to go to be private and not seen by all their friends? So they ran home, wouldn't you?
