The abomination of desolation concerns city of Jerusalem of Israel only (Mt. 24:15)

The abomination of desolation marks the starting point of the middle of Daniel's 70th week when the Antichrist will break his 7- year covenant with Israel and enter Judea to take over Jerusalem as his capital and the Jewish temple as his capital building (Dan. 9:27; 11:40- 45 12:1, 7; 2Th. 2:4; Rev. 11:1- 2 12:1- 17 13:1- 18). All this prophecy from Mt. 24:15 on must be fulfilled the last 3 1/2 years of this age.

The Jewish temple in Mt. 24:15 refers to the Antichrist and his image in the Jewish temple at Jerusalem during the last 3 1/2 years of this age (Dan. 8:9- 14 9:27; 11:45; 12:1, 7, 11; Rev. 13:1- 18 14:9- 11 20:4- 6).

When Antichrist flights of Israel in Mt. 24:16, he enters Judea and takes over the temple (Dan. 9:27; 11:40- 45). Israel will have to flee from Judea Into Edom and Moab (mountains) which escape the Antichrist (Rev. 12:6, 14).

Jesus said pray that the invasion will not take place in winter as it would be difficult to flee without preparation at this time; nor on the sabbath (Mt. 24:20), because orthodox Jews hold it unlawful to travel more than a 0.6 mile on that day (Acts 1:12), so would be overtaken by the invaders.

Then great tribulation (Mt. 24:21) starts with beast worship in the Jerusalem temple for the last 3 1/2 years of this age (Dan. 9:27; 11:40- 45 12:1, 7, 11; Jer. 30:4- 7 Rev. 7:14; 11:1-- Rev. 19:21).

The last generation Jews living on earth at the time all these things are the only people to be gathered in Mt. 24:31 will be fulfilled. The coming of Christ is to deliver Israel (Mt. 24:29- 31 25:31- 46 Zech. 14)

Judgment of the nations is based on treatment of Israel (Mt. 25:31- 46)
The eagles eating carcasses was predicted to be at the time of Israel's deliverance (Mt. 24:28; Ezek. 39:17- 22 Lk. 17:34- 37 Rev. 19:17- 21)

Jerusalem temple will be desolate again when Christ return with His saints.

Jesus in Matthew 24:15 tells that the mystery of abomination of desolation is found in the book of Daniel. Although, when we study the book, we discover that the abomination of desolation can be divided into three parts:

1. The abomination of desolation in Daniel's day, involving the first temple. 

2. The abomination of desolation in Jesus' day, involving the second temple.

3. And finally the abomination of desolation in the time of the end, involving the Christian church. The issues that come into play in the abomination of desolation as treated in the book of Daniel remain consistent in each of its three phases.

The phrase “Abomination of Desolation,” Matthew 24:15, Mark 13:14, is made up of two terms. The first is “abomination” (Greek “bdelygma”) which means something very detestable or disgusting. It is also found in Luke 16:15, Revelation 17:4-5, 21:27. The second term is “desolation” (Greek “eremosis”), also found in Luke 21:20, which means complete devastation or ruin.

The two terms together, “abomination of desolation” means something so detestable that it causes complete devastation. Jesus said it will stand in the holy place, which means the temple, so that whatever is placed there will be completely abhorrent. It will render the place unusable because it is defiled or polluted.

When Jesus said it was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, the Jews very well knew the passages that mention the abomination of desolation (Hebrew, “siqqus samem”). They refer to two different events. 

The abomination of desolation refers to a past event. From reading Daniel 11:31 as well as their history, the Jews would know how in 167 BC, the Syrian king, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, overthrew the Jewish priests, erected the idol of Zeus inside the temple, and sacrificed pigs on the altar. 

It is also a future event - history will repeat itself. The abomination of desolation will again be done in the temple by a future person, Daniel 9:27, which will be half-way through the seven-year Tribulation period. As Jesus pointed out in Matthew 24:15-21, the abomination of desolation marks the beginning of the “great Tribulation.” This will last 3½ years (also “a time, times, and half a time,” 1,260 days, or 42 months), Daniel 7:25, 12:7, Revelation 11:2-3 12:14. When Daniel says 1,290 days from the abomination of desolation to the end of the Tribulation, Daniel 12:11, the extra 30 days may be for the “sheep and goats” judgment of the Gentile nations, Matthew 25:31-46. Another 45 days to the 1,335 days of Daniel 12:12 may be for the Judgment Seat of Christ, Matthew 16:27, II Timothy 4:1, and perhaps purification for the millennial kingdom. 

In Daniel 9:27, it reads “wing of abominations,” which may be the same place as the pinnacle or wing at the top of the temple where Satan set Jesus on to tempt Him to throw Himself down, Matthew 4:5. 

This blaspheming, lawless one, the Antichrist, I John 2:18, 4:3, will honor false gods, Daniel 11:36-38, and proclaim himself to be God and sit in the temple, II Thessalonians 2:4. 

That is why Jesus said that when those living at that time see this standing in the temple, they are to flee to the mountains, Matthew 24:15, 16, Mark 13:14. It will be critical for the Jews to evacuate as quickly as possible to a place of safety, which God has prepared and where God will protect them, Revelation 12:6, 14.

At the end of this time, Jesus, the Faithful and the True, will come to defeat the one causing abomination, Revelation 19:11, 20, and set up His holy kingdom.
