What does it mean to walk by faith not by sight?

For me, this verse from Proverbs answers the question in a nutshell:
'Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, (or 'acknowledge him') and he will make your paths straight.' (or, 'he will direct your paths') Proverbs 3:5-6 

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 1:17

'Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.' Hebrews 11:1

So, walking by faith is living with confidence in the hope we have in Christ. What is this hope? It is that all the promises we have from the Lord will be fulfilled as we walk in obedience to Him. 


'His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.' 2 Peter 1:3-5 

'Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.' Romans 1:5

Where does this faith, this confidence, come from?

'So, faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.' Roman 10:17

'My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:' John 10:27

It comes from listening to Him. When we are truly born again we come into a personal relationship with the Lord and quickly learn to recognise His voice as He speaks to our heart. If we listen and follow Him, we are living by faith and not by sight. When we do this our automatic response should be to acknowledge that He is Lord of our lives to others.

'For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.' Romans 10:10

Andy Mangus I am a Christian since October 1979 & devoted truth seeker.

This is a daily duty and self-conscience issue that I seem to think about almost on a daily basis. To me, 'walking in the presence of God's Holy Spirit' starts every morning at awakening and realizing daily that I am a 'rescued, blessed and utterly eternally thankful "child of God". 

This internal sense of 'Christian duty' has been with me since that blessed evening in October 1979. The Gospel writings in the New Testament especially expresses how much He wants each of us to 'walk with Him, Talk with Him' and "listen to His still small voice" and "know that He is God" and that "He knew us before the foundation of the world, for which He created for us". God wants us to "Trust in Him"; "Trust in the Lord with all your heart"; these are the ways that any and every child of God exhibits his or her 'faith' in that they truly believe in "the many blessings that God has in store for each of us".

As the old Gospel hymn says, "name the many blessings God has done, name the many blessings, name them one by one...name the many blessings God has done!" God tells us "to lean not upon our own understanding, but trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all our ways and He will(shall) direct your paths". 

Personally, I feel His love eternal and His blessed source of guidance on a daily basis; Jesus loves me and cares for me. He created man(me) and you to love and be loved by you through our worship, praise and glory to God, the Father, in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, in the power of His Holy Spirit. **For this Truth and Revelation in His written and spoken Word, I am eternally thankful.** 

John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life." Thank You, Dear Lord JESUS, AMEN! --Andy--

This simply means to walk into something or somewhere not knowing where it is neither no knowing what awaits you. This is the "act of faith". Going or doing something that you are not able to see of know.

It is true we all have faith, we talk about faith, we confess our faith, but do we have the "God" kind of faith. This type of faith can be experienced by persons that are dead in Christ, who like the apostle would say "I live but yet not I, but Christ live th in me". The apostle died on route to Damascus, his life there on were acts of faith.

Faith is more than trusting, it is totally believing. Abraham firstly trusted God when he was asked to leave his county and his kindred, but when he was told he would be the father of many nations, he questioned God about his ability. If he totally believed he would not have mentioned his servant in Genesis 15th chapter. He would not have accepted Hagar to bring forth the seed. Abraham did not really believe, even though he may have trusted in the beginning.

Faith is doing all that the "word" commands us to do, with no questions asked, because we simply believe. Peter confessed that the Christ was the son of God, yet he was rebuked by Jesus, yet he left it all to follow Jesus.

This is why Jesus himself asked "would the son of man find faith when he comes again". It is my understanding when we have people of biblical faith they would turn this world like Jesus and the apostles in the book of acts.
