In the beatitudes the little word "for" is the key to having a clearer understanding of the entire passage. It was pointed out to me several years ago that the Greek word is ho'-tē with the following definition: that, because, since. Christ isn't stating that if we exhibit these sentiments and attributes we will be blessed, filled, comforted, etc. But rather "because"of God' s inward work in our hearts these attributes will have an outward manifestation. These are evidences and characteristics of regeneration, not prerequisites.

The more we seek God, the more intimate we become with him. The closer we are with Him, we understand what His attributes are. We also see what God'S LOVE means. When we see HIs love, it shows us how deficient we are in love. When we see His mercy, we see how deficient we are in mercy, when we see His compassion and justice, we see more clearly our sin nature. And that grieves us, but we are blessed because we desire to be more like him and to be less like ourselves. We mourn, but we are blessed.
