I'm not a Bible scholar, just a believer in Jesus and His saving Grace. I can offer only my own opinion and observances. 

Some people are made to suffer so that others may see the hand of Jesus' Grace first hand. Relatives, medical personnel, and visitors may marvel that even in the face of great pain a Christian may display a serenity found only in Jesus. 

Others may suffer so that another person, a Christian, may lead them to Jesus. Perhaps that is the only way for God to get the person to slow down and listen. 

Yet another may be displaying the results of a lifetime of sin and stands as a reminder to others to not follow the same path. 

Watching a child suffering through no fault of their own is amazingly difficult, but these, too, can reflect the Love and Power of our God Almighty, sometimes in the salvation of a loved one brought into contact with a nurse who believes with strength and conviction. Maybe the silent testimony of a grandparent holding a small hand and praying and telling Bible stories until the voice is hoarse. 

We may never know the result of someone's suffering, or the cause of it. Sometimes we need to reflect only on the truth that there IS a reason that we cannot fathom. Suffering in this life is nearly guaranteed due to the fallen nature of man. But so is redemption and a final promise of no more pain for those who believe. And the offer of Grace to one who does not believe but finds Jesus holding out a hand in the form of a parent or child or doctor or chaplain, or even an angel.
