One definition* of justice that may help to explain this is "...a scheme or system of law in which every person receives his/ her/its due from the system, including all rights, both natural and legal...". In other words, the God of justice works towards ensuring everyone receives what is due to them. This means they get their rights (if they are in right standing with him) but also get due punishment (if they are wicked, ungodly etc). The justice of God indeed ensures that my sin and your sin is punished. 

Through God’s love and mercy, Jesus took on this punishment on our behalf. Once you accept Jesus finished work on the cross and receive Him in your heart as Lord, you are a new creation 2 Cor 5:17 with new rights. God's justice now works in your favor. For instance in Psalm 103:6, 140:12 the Lord executes justice for the poor and the oppressed i.e. if you are oppressed by the enemy or if the enemy steals from you God continually works towards setting things right by restoring what was lost, taken away etc as stated in Joel 2:25, Deut 30:3. In a nutshell God's justice works against His (and your) enemies but for His (and your) good when you are in right standing with Him.
