In his answer Michael made a very insightful observation and that was the fact that Jesus was considered a prophet only by others around Him and not by Him. He asked His disciples “Who do people say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets”. “But what about you?”, He asked, “Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:27-28). Peter answered “You are the Christ of God (Luke 9:20)”. Again when testing the Pharisees who believed that Christ was the son of David, He asked them “If then David calls him ‘Lord’, how can he be his son? (Matthew 22:45)”.

Jesus referred to the title ‘prophet’ only to show that He too was suffering the same fate as many of the previous prophets. He said “I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his home town (Luke 4:24)”. He made the point that the era of prophets had finished with John the Baptist. “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John (Luke 16:16)”. 

Although He acknowledged that He was being referred to as a prophet He referred to Himself only with two titles. “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life (Luke 9:22)”. That title helped His followers to relate to his human nature and is also unique in that it had not been used by anyone else before or since Jesus. 

At the same time Jesus wanted to make it clear that He was also divine, “God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24)” and explained His relationship to God in this way “No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him (Luke 10:22)”. This latter point also demonstrates that He had been granted extraordinary powers by the God. He said “Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgement to the Son, that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent Him (John 5:22)”. 

In response to the Samaritan woman’s statement that the Messiah is coming He confirmed, “I who speak to you am He (John 4:26)”. Jesus is divine in His own right because He is the Son of God who has been given all powers by the Father. “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day (John 6:40)”. 

The father-son relationship Jesus had with God was confirmed by Him over and over again in His teachings “Father, the time has come, Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you..........And now Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began (John 17:1-5)”. God did glorify Him. “And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with whom I am well pleased (Luke 3:22)’ and again during the transfiguration ‘A voice came from the cloud saying ‘This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him (Luke 9:35)”. 

Jesus is a prophet, but more so He is the Son of Man who paid for our sins through His life sacrifice and is Son of God who is in judgement of all of us.

Jesus was the ULTIMATE prophet, but He was not JUST a prophet! Jesus is the son of the living God who prophesied the things of God while on this earth!

Jesus was not a Prophet, He was God Incarnet, (Luke 9:20) and the perfect man and the Lamb of God that spilled His blood for us in order for us to have Eternal Life. He is alive and seated in Heaven looking at us for He is the only Way, the only Truth (all truth is based on Him), and the only Life that leads to Eternal Life. If you don't know Him, what are you waiting for?
