Dear Anonymous, the scripture doesn't give us a clear reason why Jesus didn't answer; however, I believe it's safe to say, that it wasn't the Father's will for Him to defend Himself against the accusations of these false witnesses.

I do recall Jesus saying, that He only spoke the words that the Father commanded Him to speak.

We do see Him answering the next question of the high priest, as it pertains to His Deity.

The short answer is, so that the prophecy of Isaiah 53:7 would be fulfilled in every detail.

Longer: Because He knew it was the Father's Will. Remember, He prayed, "If possible, I pray this cup pass from Me, but nevertheless, not My will, but Your will be done, Father." (Matthew 26:39)

He told the disciples so many times, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and all the prophecies concerning Him must come to pass, and then I must go to Jerusalem and there be put to death." (Luke 9:22, Luke 22:37, Luke 24:44)

Our fleshly understanding is not G-d's Perspective. Recall when Peter (Kefa) rebuked Him, but Yeshua said, "Get behind me, Satan." (Matthew 16:23)

We can see that Ha Satan's plan was different than G-d's because in Yeshua's testing, none of it in any way was helping advance G-d's plan. Yeshua rebuked Ha Satan, there on the spot, which was what had failed to happen from mankind, in the Garden.

Yeshua was tested 3 times (Matthew 4:3-10), but with Peter we could say it was an unofficial 4th time.

The plan was always for Yeshua to be delivered up to be executed on our behalf (1 Peter 1:19-20, Revelation 13:8, Mark 10:45, Matthew 20:28, 1 Timothy 2:6). Yet no one took His Life, but He willing laid it down. (John 10:17-18)

There are so many prophecies that were declared beforetime that we regular people would have never known was about Him, if He Himself had not told us so. Prophecies in the Psalms, or Micah 5:2 for example, regarding the place of His Birth.

On the Road to Emmaus the disciples had the unique blessing of having the Lord open up the entire Bible to them and go through the entirety of Scriptures that pointed to Him. (Luke 24:45)
