What does it mean that Jesus is "both Lord and Messiah"?

Both Lord and Messiah"(Acts 2:36) means Jesus is recognised as the promised Saviour/King of Israel (Messiah) and the divine Ruler over all creation (Lord). This title affirms his identity as the resurrected, authoritative Son of God who demands absolute allegiance, surpassing earthly powers.

Messiah (Christ): Refers to Jesus as the anointed one, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies as the saviour who brings redemption and forgiveness.

Atoning Sacrifice: While many in Jesus' time expected a military leader to overthrow Rome, the New Testament redefines the Messiah as a "suffering servant" who saves humanity from sin through his death and resurrection.

Threefold Office: Jesus fulfils the messianic roles of Prophet (revealing God's word), Priest (mediating for humanity), and King (ruling over God's people)

This title calls followers to submit their lives to his authority as King and Saviour.

To call Jesus "Lord" is an act of submission. It means acknowledging one's right to govern every aspect of one's life, private and public.

He is Saviour: he rescues us from our sins. He isthe Messiah: the long-awaited King who reigns forever. He is Lord: he rules over all.

'The Word became flesh and dwelt among us' (John 1:14); he became what he wasn't before, human, but without ceasing to be God. But now Acts is talking about his exaltation, and God has made him, that is, demonstrated him to be, both Lord and Christ (see Acts 2:36).
