1Tim. 2:9: "... in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing." How is that to be understood today?
1 Timothy 2:9
ESV - 9 Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire.

Bro. Neufeld, this verse is clearly stated and leaves no room for misinterpretation! In today's society the women who profess to be godly dress as provocative as the women of the world! There should be a distinction, but unfortunately there is not. Paul emphasizes the importance of godliness with good works! As Christian women we should dress modestly to display the nature of God, and show that we belong to Jesus Christ! So much emphasis is placed on the outer appearance, rather than our character. We should be following the wisdom that has been set before us in this verse of Scripture! 2 Timothy 3:16: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

I understand it to simply mean that women, but men also (since they are spoken of in verse 8) are to be mindful of where they are and why they are there. You are there to offer your heart and love and mind to God. You are not there to impress a member of the opposite sex. Dress respectfully; you don't need to be "dowdy," but you are there to humble yourself before the Living Eternal Lord Jesus Christ. God already knows every inch of you!
