My understanding from this verse in 2nd Peter comes a few verses earlier: 2 Peter 3:8-9 NIV:

[8] But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. [9] The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

These two verses, to me, explain what Peter is calling "the Lord's patience" in verse 10. He is referring to the period of waiting for everyone to come to repentance. How does this mean Salvation? In two ways.

First if not for this patience, many who will get saved in this period of time would not have the chance for repentance. But most importantly, Peter is urging us (just like Paul does in many of his letters) to persevere in waiting so that we don't give up before we reach the prize that is promised to us. A couple of verses later he tells us: 2 Peter 3:17 NIV:

[17] Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.

What was the warning he is speaking of? Just 20 verses earlier in this discourse he tells us in 2 Peter 2:20-22 NIV:

[20] If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. [21] It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. [22] Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
Hold fast! Persevere to the end! Hang on to the Hope! Salvation comes to those who Believe. Believe is present tense. Keep believing! While you are believing, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love others as yourself!"

Dear Anonymous, in this verse of Scripture, the Apostle Peter is speaking about the longsuffering of God. The Lord is patient towards those who are lost, and desires to lead them to repentance!

So it was, in the days of Noah when the longsuffering of God waited for the ark to be built.

The Bible reveals Noah as a preacher of righteousness, who warned the wicked that the LORD was sending a flood upon the earth that would destroy everything that had the breath of life.

It is the same today, as the Gospel is being preached by Christians to non-believers all over the world, and warning them of the judgment of God that shall come upon all who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!
