16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:16-21 NKJV

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV

Storing treasures for yourselves isn't allowed, especially if the savings are for retirement. It shows a lack of faith and trust in God.

Forgoing company pensions, 401K plans, IRAs, etc., is a righteous choice. By such perseverance through trials of faith, Christians are perfected (James 1:2-4).

Social security is mandated by government and not what individuals do for themselves. Therefore, receiving social security payments is approved.

Some bible teachers point to Proverbs 21:20 "Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it" as proof that storing up treasures are approved by God.

They fail to discern the difference between keeping some precious treasure "for a rainy day" and storing up treasure for retirement.

Because they're teachers, they will be held to a stricter standard (James 3:1) and should be more careful in what they teach.
