What can we learn about Ezra and his character from verse 10?

10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.

How was he an example to follow?

After reading the Book of Ezra, my opinion is the following:

Ezra 7:10 - For Ezra had settled his heart, to study the law of Yahweh and to do [it],—and to teach in Israel statute and regulation. [Rotherham Bible]

What an example for all Christians today - we too must prepare our hearts in serving God in truth like Ezra.

Ezra was an Aaronic priest, a descendant of Eleazar and Phinehas, a scholar, an expert copyist, and teacher of the Law, skilled in both Hebrew and Aramaic. Ezra also had genuine zeal for pure worship and “prepared his heart to consult the law of Yahweh [Jehovah in common language] and to do it and to teach in Israel regulation and justice.” (Ezr 7:1-6, 10)

Ezra was a diligent student and effective teacher of God’s Word. Ezra set an example for us. He prayerfully prepared his heart to consult the Law of Yahweh. As he consulted it, Ezra gave his utmost attention to what Jehovah was saying. Ezra applied what he learned and exerted himself in teaching others.

To be a capable teacher, like Ezra, we also must consult God’s Word daily. We should give profound attention to the things Jehovah is telling us or prescribing through his Word, the Bible. After all, his counsel concerns our very life! Matthew 4:4 -8

Conclusion:

WHAT MADE EZRA’S TEACHING EFFECTIVE?

1. He brought his heart into a proper condition.

2. He consulted the Law of Jehovah.

3. He set a good example in applying what he learned.

4. He applied himself to teaching the Scriptural view.

We see that Ezra was a man who revered God and kept the commandments of the LORD (Yahweh).

Not only did he keep the commandments of the LORD, but he also was a teacher of the law of Moses. He was responsible for teaching the law to the children of Israel.

As Christians, we have also been given the duty to be teachers of the new covenant of grace and to share the word of God with unbelievers.

The Apostle Paul gave Timothy who was a pastor, these instructions in 2 Timothy 2:15: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Jesus, who is our Apostle and High Priest, before he ascended back to the Father, gave his apostles this commandment, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you."

So as Ezra did, we too should set our hearts to do the will of God. We are to be doers of the Word of God, and not just hearers only, as stated in James 1:22.
