Yes, God's calling and election are sure by themselves, but the degree of eternal reward that each redeemed believer will receive depends on our actions and witness, which is how a believer "confirms" that calling and election.
There are those who think they are saved and are not. Either they have deceived themselves or they've been led by blind guides who may have been taught by false prophets - ravenous wolves dressed in sheep's clothing (Matthew 7:15). They're darnel; weeds growing among the wheat (Matt. 13:24-30). 2 Peter 1:10, like Paul, is calling upon believers to examine themselves (2 Cor. 13:5) and this theme is expanded upon within 1 John 2. Paul also admonishes seekers to not be deceived: Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Cor. 6:9-10 NKJV
