Keeping a balance in our Christian life is really hard to do. We get caught up in things and do not realize it. I have built model airplanes since I was about 8 years old. I have loved this hobby all of my life and did fly radio controlled aerobatic competition for 25 years. Most of that time my wife and I were still raising 4 children.

I learned a lot from this hobby. I learned how to do things by building all of my own planes from scratch. I learned how to keep at something until it was finished. I learned how to design things that would work and learned skills that would help me in my real job that I could not have learned any other way.

But, as with anything we do there were times I should have been spending more time with my family doing things they wanted to do. For the most part my wife who knew I needed my hobby, supported me always, and when it became to important would gently tell me so.

I would just have to take a break from the hobby and take the family fishing or hiking in the mountains.

There is also the balance of money. If you are spending great sums of money on a hobby that should go elsewhere, then it has become a problem.

I did take my family with me when going to contests and they always enjoyed that part. I could only afford to go to around 3 of those a year.

As with anything, there is good and bad. I had to retire from my job at 65 because there was so much heavy work my back would just not take anymore. But my hobby has helped me to keep busy and keep my mind working. I do not fly much competition anymore but stil build my own planes and fly when I can. The building and flying is great recreation from what ever else you are doing and lets you come back refreshed and ready to take on what ever needs to be done.

Too many men retire from life when they retire from their regular job and sort of vegetate. I thank God for my hobby and believe the desire for it came from Him. I will continue to pursue it as long as the Lord allows.

I would say Mark 6:31, what Jesus said to his followers:

"And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat."

Add this to the hymn based upon this verse:

1 Come ye yourselves apart and rest awhile,
Weary, I know it, of the press and throng,
Wipe from your brow the sweat and dust of toil,
And in my quiet strength again be strong.

2 Come, tell Me all that ye have said and done,
Your victories and failures, hopes and fears,
I know how hardly souls are wooed and won;
My choicest wreaths are always wet with tears.

3 Come ye, and rest; the journey is too great,
And ye will faint beside the way and sink:
The bread of life is here for you to eat,
And here for you the wine of love to drink.

4 Then, fresh from converse with your Lord, return
And work till daylight softens into even;
The brief hours are not lost in which ye learn
More of your Master and His rest in heaven.

Yes, a Christian can have hobbies! One of my hobbies is memorizing God's Word. I do this the first thing in the morning when I get up, online. I use verselocker.com (Scripture Memory Fellowship). It is relaxing for me, and it draws me closer to the Lord and to people of all ethnicities
