Revised Answer: How Do We Develop the Fruits of the Holy Spirit?

The fruit of the Spirit is not something we can add from the outside. Just like natural fruit comes from the life of the tree, the fruit of the Spirit flows from within—rooted in the life of the Holy Spirit inside a believer.

Let’s look at what the Bible says in Galatians 5:22–26 (ERV):

“But the fruit that the Spirit produces in a person’s life is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these kinds of things. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their sinful self. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit. We must not feel proud and boast about ourselves. We must not cause trouble for each other or be jealous of each other.”

These verses list the fruit of the Spirit. But how do we develop them in our lives?

1. We First Receive the Holy Spirit by Faith

Look at Galatians 3:5–6 (ERV):

“Does God give you the Spirit because you follow the law? … No, God gives you his Spirit and works miracles among you because you heard the message about Jesus and believed it. The Scriptures say the same thing about Abraham: ‘Abraham believed God, and because of this faith he was accepted as one who is right with God.’”

So, the first step is faith—believing in Jesus Christ. That’s how we receive the Holy Spirit, and when the Spirit lives in us, His fruit begins to grow.

2. The Fruit Grows Through Knowing God More Deeply

Spiritual growth doesn’t come by trying to be better in our own strength. It comes by growing in the knowledge of God and Jesus Christ. Here are some powerful scriptures:
•	2 Peter 1:3 – “Jesus has the power of God. And his power has given us everything we need to live a life devoted to God. We have these things because we know him.”
•	John 17:3 – “And this is eternal life: that people can know you, the only true God, and that they can know Jesus Christ, the one you sent.”
•	Ephesians 3:19 – “Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.”

As we get to know Jesus more, His love and truth shape us. That’s how the fruit of the Spirit is developed in our lives.

3. We Grow by Living in the Word and Prayer

To truly develop the fruit of the Spirit, we need to:
•	Read and meditate on the Word of God
•	Pray and spend time with God
•	Listen to godly teaching
•	Be around other Spirit-filled believers
•	Practice what we learn through obedience

The more we grow in the knowledge of the Father and of Jesus Christ, the more we become spiritually fruitful.

4. A Warning from Hosea 4:6

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6)

Without knowledge of God—without truly knowing Him—we wither spiritually. Fruitfulness requires connection, growth, and revelation.

Conclusion

We don’t develop the fruit of the Spirit by working hard in our flesh. We develop it by being filled with the Holy Spirit, growing in our knowledge of God, and living in relationship with Him through the Word and prayer.

As we grow in that relationship, the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—will naturally grow and be seen by others.
