As I read the account in Judges, Abimelech killed his brothers (the many other sons of the judge Gideon, who was also known as Jerubaal) in order that Abimelech might be the sole successor to Gideon as the next judge of Israel. The only son of Gideon who escaped alive was Jotham, who went into hiding.

Three years later, Abimelech besieged the city of Thebes, and was killed when a woman of the city threw down a large stone from the top of the city's fortified tower, which fell on Abimelech, crushing his head.
