According to the Bible, the most frightening or intimidating feature of the Anakites (whose name meant "long-necked") was their size or height (not just of selected individuals among them, but as a characteristic of their entire race), as reflected in the report of them brought back by most of the twelve spies (one from each Israelite tribe) that Moses sent to scout out the "Promised Land" of Canaan as the Israelites approached it within two years after the exodus from Egypt. As indicated in Numbers 13-14; this instilled such fear in the Israelites that they spoke of returning to Egypt, which led to God condemning them to wander in the wilderness for thirty-eight more years, until each person of that generation had died (except for faithful Joshua and Caleb, who had indicated that the Israelites would be able to conquer the Anakites with God's help, as had been the case when Israel had left Egypt).
