When Moses asked God to select someone who would be the new leader for the nation after his own death (since God had already told Moses that neither he nor Aaron would live to take Israel into Canaan (Numbers 20:1-13)), Joshua was designated as Moses' successor by God Himself in Numbers 27:15-23.
