What are the elemental spirits mentioned in Colossians 2:8?

Colossians 2:8

[8] See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

The elemental spirits of the world, or as the KJV reads "rudiments of the world", are contrary to the "completeness" we have in Christ through having faith alone in Him and the work that He competed for us at the cross (Col 2:10). Rather than worship through carnal doctrines of man or with physical elements of this world, we are to seek that which is of heaven and spiritual (Col 3:1). Believers are perfected through faith rather than 'physical' worship. Our faith increases by study of scripture, which is the true Word of God and authored by the Spirit.

Rom 10:17
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Phil 3:2-3
"Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."

Gal 3:1-3
"O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?"

Col 2:9-15

"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."

Basically, Christ completed everything required of God on our behalf. When we place our faith in this (Him, His completed work for us, His blood for the forgiveness of our sins, and His burial and resurrection for our justification) we are imputed with His righteousness before God (Rom 4). There is nothing further required by us that will please Him. It was Christ who pleased God and our faith in Him places us into the church which is His body. It is not by following doctrines of man or any other rudiment of this world.

Col 2:20-23
"Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh."
