Did the law teach trust in God (Psalm 78:5-7)?

Psalm 78:5-7 reads:

    "He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
    which he commanded our ancestors
    to teach their children,
so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.
Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
    but would keep his commands."

The Law (in my opinion) spoke of trusting God, but did so in a somewhat contrary fashion by saying -- in one of the verses that Jesus quoted when Satan tempted Him (Deuteronomy 6:16; Matthew 4:7; Luke 4:12) -- "You shall not put the LORD your God to the test." Instead, we are to trust that whatever He commands us, or permits us to experience, is part of the "all things" that work together for good to those who love God (Romans 8:28), even if its immediate (or eternal) benefit is not apparent to our limited, temporal minds.
