Does Jesus approve situation ethics (instead of absolute ethics), when he approves the eating of grain by his disciples?
It is emphasized that Christian faith is based on absolute ethics, not situational ethics. Matthews 12:1-4 seems to promote a form of situational ethics.

ESV - 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.

First, faith is a gift from God. Because I trust God, He has opened my eyes to see all of the Bible is the inspired word of God. Now, we must remember that all of the Bible is for our learning, correction and reproof. 2 Timothy 3:16. But also keep in mind that not everything applies to us today. For example, we don't use burnt offerings today as a means of repentance. Look at the book of Leviticus. We use prayer and worship. Jesus was /is God. I believe He was illustrating that God cares about everything that we need and feel. The men were hungry. God provided the world for man to supply all that man needs. Man has to choose who He will obey. What is more important? Jesus wants us to listen to Him. In fact He illustrated that several times... See Matthew 4:19, Mark 10:21, Luke 9:23,24, John 12:25,26. I had a minister who once said, "It's not about me, it's all about Him." We must remember, it is all about our faith and trust in His grace. Remember Jesus was trying to teach them God is always first!
