How should a Christian address poverty?

Mark 14:7

ESV - 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.

I would say that Christians should do all within their power to responsibly manage their own resources, recognizing them as a blessing from God to benefit themselves and others, so that they themselves do not become a burden on others or on society as a whole, and also so that they can share them in a discerning manner with the church for its mission and other charitable work, and also directly with those who are less fortunate. They should also teach their households and descendants those same values, in order to perpetuate them.

Along with sharing resources, they should also at the same time spread the gospel message in order to bring those in need to Christ for benefits that will extend beyond this world and life, and that will last eternally..

I hope this question is also addressed to the many Christians who are themselves living in poverty. We are well aware that there are millions of Christians all over the world who are living far below the poverty level. (Many also right here in the richest country on the planet, the United States of America). How should they address poverty? I believe many of them do share their meager resources. I know they spread the gospel; they always have! I know that on a personal level.

I struggle with this kind of question. I hope no one assumes that Christians are immune to being themselves caught up in the wilderness of poverty! If so, that's a terrible assumption.

I think a wealthy Christian should address poverty by being a generous philanthropist. Others should do all they can afford to do to help. But, what about the the poor Christians, the ones who are themselves caught in the throes of generational poverty, how should they address poverty? They are just as Spirit filled and born again as the billionaire Christian. I hope this question is being addressed to them the same as it is to every other born again believer.

Yes, Jesus said that poverty would always exist. He said that! He didn't say, 'Poverty should be allowed to spread,' or that it was okay. He didn't say, 'It's useless to try to end it or to intercede for the poor.' Nor did He say, 'It's unsolvable!' He didn't say any of that.

A woman came to the house of a man named Simon where Jesus was having dinner, and poured an expensive oil of spikenard on Jesus' head. IT WAS AN ACT OF WORSHIP! The critics who were there said it was A WASTE and should have been sold and the proceeds could have gone to help the poor (Mark 14:5). To which Jesus replied, "You have the poor with you always, and whenever you want you may do them good; but Me you do not have always." (vs7) He told them the lady was doing a good thing, and they should leave her alone!

Which is more important, more time sensitive, worship or charity? I think He answered that.

The ability to give can have limitations; not everyone is able to address hardship by giving. On the basis of worship, all Christians are evenly matched, however. We can all worship the Lord.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker (Psalm 95:6)

Oh do not let the oppressed return ashamed! Let the poor and needy praise Your name. (Psalm 74:21)

The lady with the alabaster of spikenard took advantage of an opportunity to bless the Lord in worship. We can all do that!
