From the content and tone of Ecclesiastes, I interpret it as having been written toward the end of Solomon's reign, when he had experienced all the tangible or fleshly pleasures that his position as king could bring him, as well as having accommodated the false gods of his hundreds of foreign wives, and having had ample time to observe the fates of others, leading him to conclude that it all was useless vanity in comparison (as he summarized in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) to fearing God and keeping His commandments, which were the only goals of eternal value.
