1 Samuel 24:1-7, this scripture is the background for this Psalm.

In Genesis 37:20, we read, "Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit..." this happened to Joseph, who was a type of Christ. You remember that the incident was turned into good by God. Many people were helped because God is sovereign. 

Joseph had been cast into a "pit" by His own brothers, "his enemies."

In this Psalm we read of a "net" and a "pit."

David the King (the author of this Psalm), was a forefather of Christ the King. This is a prayer by David for safety from his enemies. This Psalm is also a snapshot of the life of Christ.

The "net" was a trap, set for David, by King Saul's "3000" men. King Saul wanted to trap David and kill him. As you recall, the people of the country demanded a king, to be like the surrounding countries. They chose Saul to be their king. See 1 Samuel 8:17; 9:2, 10, 15, 16. Saul was not the choice of God.

Psalm 2:2: "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take council together, against the Lord, and His annointed...."

This Psalm speaks about Christ, but, in it I also see King David. He was the King that God had chosen to lead His chosen people.

In 1 Samuel 24:3, we read Saul went into a cave to attend his needs. David was in that cave/pit! David could have killed Saul.

The net he set for David was the pit that could have been his death!

David, God's choice, the man after God's own heart, acted honorably. He respected Saul as the King!

Jesus, God's Beloved Son, was sent into the world to save any who would accept His sacrifice. He came into the snare, the net of the world's sin. He came into the pit of destruction, to release us from eternal death, separation from God.
