As indicated by the wording cited in the question, God's promise to David was conditional (that is, it contained an "if" clause). One of David's descendants would continue to sit on David's throne as long as each descendant would keep God's covenant and statutes.

This promise was fufilled with respect to David by his son Solomon being his immediate successor. And Solomon also pleased God early in his reign by asking God for wisdom (1 Kings 3:4-14).

However, later in his reign, under the influence of his many foreign (and pagan) wives, Solomon turned away from the worship of the God of israel, and built temples to the foreign gods that his wives worshiped. As a result, God revoked the covenant that He had made with David, although he still promised that the Israelite tribes of Judah and Benjamin would remain under the rule of Solomon's descendants (1 Kings 11:1-15).

Eventually, all the Israelite tribes -- including Judah (David and Solomon's tribe) and Benjamin -- were conquered and sent into exile into Assyria or Babylon because of their disobedience to God and their worship of idols. However, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin retained their lineage and identity, which eventually allowed Israel's promised Messiah (Jesus) to be descended from David with respect to the ancestry of both His birth mother (as recorded in Luke 3:23-38) and the royal lineage of His earthly father (as recorded in Matthew 1:2-16) (although Joseph's royal lineage was invalidated because of his descent from Jeconiah (also known as Coniah), whom God had cursed (Jeremiah 22:28-30)).

Because Jesus is now alive forever as a result of His resurrection from the dead, He will eternally reign as Israel's king, in fulfillment of God's promise to David.

In order to fulfill this promise to king David, GOD only requires one 'seed' from David's genetic line, which was also a simultaneous fulfillment of a promise He made to Abraham:

"Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And TO YOUR SEED,” that is, Christ." (Galatians 3:16).

“I, Jesus, sent My angel to bear witness to you of these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” (Revelation 22:16). 

When the Lord Jesus Christ returns He will actually set up His throne upon the seat of David in the current Jerusalem, reigning for 1,000 years while Satan and his minions develop the future army of Armageddon in the 'abyss of outer darkness,' (which, by all descriptions, sounds very much like 'space'). 

The current world will face a judgment, (not yet the 'final Judgment'), during which it will be 'reorganized' and cleansed of its current evil. It is this 'peaceful world' ruled by Christ from Jerusalem and filled with 'unwalled villages' that will come under attack, resulting in the battle of Armageddon and a victorious Christ. This is because 'every thought' raised up against Christ must be first brought under subjection to Him, (2 Corinthians 10:3-6). 

This same 'seed of David' will later establish His throne forever in the 'New Jerusalem,' a city of unmatched beauty and purest righteousness, (having never been tainted by the presence of evil), as part of the full revelation of GOD's new 'project' already completed and waiting to be revealed from heaven; a new heaven and new earth, the 'Home of Righteousness,' (Revelation 21).

So while we no longer look upon Jesus in the 'fleshly' way or as exclusively a physical 'Jew' only, (2 Corinthians 5:16), this genetic identity will forever be an 'equal part' of Christ's glorified body, fulfilling the divine promise made to David. 

GOD always keeps His word.
