Why did God call the people "Virgin Israel"? (Jeremiah 31:4)

Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord appeared to us in the past,[a] saying:

“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.
4
I will build you up again,
    and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt.
Again you will take up your timbrels
    and go out to dance with the joyful.

In my opinion, in the cited passage, God is saying that He will restore Israel to its former spiritual purity (likened to physical virginity) -- before the time that it defiled itself by worshipping other gods (that is, committing spiritual adultery or fornication with them).

The expression "virgin of Israel" is the another way of saying we must be born of God's will/born again, as opposed to be born of our self will. Being referred to as a "virgin" means that the two wills (our will joined to will of "I AM") has not yet occurred.
