Since Hebrews (as the name implies) was addressed to a Jewish readership, the epistle was devoted both to presenting Christ as the fulfillment of historical prophecy that had been given specifically to Israel, and as an authority superior to the great figures of the Old Testament (particularly Moses, through whom God delivered Israel from its bondage in Egypt, and also gave His Law to Israel).

This is particularly evident in Hebrews 3, where the writer exhorts his readers to give Christ the greater honor that is due to Him, just as the builder of a house deserves greater honor than the house itself (regarded first as Jews, and later Christians).

In light of that superiority, the writer then subsequently entreats his readers not to harden their hearts and reject Christ through unbelief, as the Israelites had repeatedly rebelled against God and His servant Moses following the exodus from Egypt, causing God to punish them with increasing severity, culminating in their forty years of wandering in the wilderness, until all adults had died there.
