Why did God tell Jeremiah not to pray? (Jeremiah 7:16)

Jeremiah 7:16  Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

ESV - 1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord : 2 Stand in the gate of the Lord 's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord.

God, being omniscient, was aware that, regardless of whether Jeremiah interceded with Him for the people (as individuals such as Moses and Samuel had done in their eras), it would have no effect on the people's sinful actions, since their evil had reached such a degree that they had passed a spiritual "point of no return", where nothing would succeed in enabling them to repent, reform, and be restored. There remained only the just and righteous judgment that God would inflict upon them for their actions.
