If I am understanding the question correctly, I would say that the purpose of gender would have been, first, to make reproduction possible, and, then, from a human standpoint (and as stated by God Himself), to make a helper "meet" (that is, suitable) for the man whom He had created with respect to physical, emotional, and behavioral characteristics and aspects that complemented those of the man.
