As indicated in the passage cited in the question, Heman was a minstrel from the priestly tribe of Levi. He was a grandson of the prophet Samuel. Because of his family's position within the tribe, the choir that he led occupied the center (chief) position in worship, having on its right that of the Gershonite Asaph, on its left that of the Merarite Ethan (1Chronicles 6:39; 1 Chronicles 6:44), so that Heman would conduct the whole body of musicians, when the three choirs chanted in concert.
