How did a "clay jar" protect the documents? (Jeremiah 32:14)
14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.
Jeremiah 32:1 - 15
ESV - 1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah.

A commentary on the verse cited in the question, taken from Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible: "Had these writings been laid up in a chest or box, they might have been stolen and destroyed; and had they been laid in the earth by themselves, they would have rotted and consumed; but being put into a dry earthen vessel, they might be preserved from the injury of the air and the moistness of the earth; and so might continue many days, even many years, to the end of the captivity, as it was designed they should." Of course, many modern methods or devices would provide better protection, but the instructions in the cited verse were intended to be effective, given the state of preservation "technology" at that time.

They could not be stolen, either, if the clay jar was buried where no one else knew. -- JFB Our Lord's tomb may have been thus sealed, (Matthew 27:66) as also the earthen vessel containing the evidences of Jeremiah's purchase. (Jeremiah 32:14). [SMITH] Our Lord's tomb was sealed so as to prevent theft.
