As far as I am aware, the very first mention of Gilgal (which might mean either "rolling away" -- since it was where the Israelites were circumcised after leaving Egypt, which "rolled away" the reproach of their uncircumcision -- or "circle of stones", such as might be erected as a memorial) in the Bible is found in Deuteronomy 11:30 in connection with Moses' instructions to the Israelites as they were preparing to cross the Jordan River and enter the Promised Land (which was accomplished under Moses' successor, Joshua). Gilgal is subsequently mentioned frequently in the book of Joshua, because it was where the Israelites camped after crossing the Jordan, as recounted in Joshua 4:19-5:12.) Gilgal is also mentioned as part of Samuel's circuit as the last judge of Israel, and as the home of a company of prophets in 2 Kings 4:38.
