Jesus was a revolutionary in the sense of requiring that, in cases of irreconcilable conflict, allegiance to Him take precedence over allegiance or obedience to any earthly government. At the same time, however, he made clear that His kingdom was not of this world, and that obedience to God was not incompatible with such earthly governmental functions as the levying of taxes (Matthew 22:21), or (as earlier indicated by John the Baptist in Luke 3:14) conscription into military service. (Peter later echoed this in 1 Peter 2:17 when he told his readers to honor the emperor.) Jesus' primary mission (and one that He alone could accomplish) was a spiritual one as a sacrifice for sin, rather than a political one.
