I would say that, in the case of the situation that motivated David to compose the psalm in question, God rescued David by His control of human events, in which (as noted in 1 Samuel 23:28) Saul's pursuit of David was cut short by news that the Philistines had attacked Israel, which required Saul to direct his full attention to that invasion, since it was an external threat, rather than an internal or personal one.

At times God protects us from misfortunes like sickness and accidents. I praise Him for this as I've been really sick before, and He healed me. There was that time when I was so sick and near death, I felt, that I called for the elders of my church to come, anoint me with oil, and pray for me which they graciously did. Also, He protected me from being killed when I was hit by a car while bicycling home from my job as a dishwasher at a Coco's Restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ.

At other times God rescues us from denying our Lord or doing something else that would disgrace God’s name (2 Timothy 4:18 -"The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen." (Wiersbe) In fact, there was a time when I taught this Scripture song to kids, mainly ages 5-8, in church. (I taught kids for 14 years as a Children's Pastor).

Sometimes He protects us from spiritual troubles conquering us. Jesus taught us, His disciples, to pray, “Deliver us from the evil one” [Satan] in Matthew 6:13. QSB
