Why is unity so important to the essence of the church?

John 17:20 - 24

ESV - 20 I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word. 21 That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

In a word, sanctification. It means being set apart. To be distinct from what is common.

1 Corinthians 1:30: "But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God - and righteousness and sanctification and redemption."

Jesus not only prayed for those that God gave Him (verse 9) But for all future believers, for their unity.

He prayed that all may be one, united, which indicates that Jesus was praying for the unity that takes place through the sanctification of believers. Jesus commanded this is John 13:34,35. Followers had to love each other so that the world may believe in the reality of Jesus love. The loving reality of believers is the greatest witness to Jesus Christ.

This witness should bring more into the love God offers.
