Why did the writer use such a strong figure of speech? (Proverbs 11:22)
22 "Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion." (NIV)

Assuming the writer of the cited verse to have been Solomon, I would say that the language of the verse reflected his extensive experience with women (through his seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines, as indicated in 1 Kings 11:3), as well as his deliberate employment of strong, memorable contrasting imagery to make a point about which that experience had apparently caused him to feel very strongly. Even down to the present day, transient female physical beauty or attractiveness is diminished if accompanied by an ongoing tactless inability to say or do what is seemly and fitting in a given situation.
