What does this passage about the temple of God mean in Jeremiah 7:8?
Jeremiah 7:8 - 12
ESV - 8 Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known.

I would say that the "deceptive words" referred to in the cited verse were being spoken by those who were saying that the people of Judah would be safe from punishment by God as long as they continued to stand in the temple and engage in a nominal and hypocritical "worship" of Him that was not reflected in their actual behavior -- behavior that was characterized by actions such as theft, murder, adultery, perjury, and idol worship. (To put it another way, they were "talking the talk", but decidedly not "walking the walk".) (Jesus referenced Jeremiah 7:11 when He cleared the moneychangers out of the temple (Matthew 21:13; Mark 11:17; Luke 19:46).)
