In a human sense, the phrase "king of kings" might be interpreted as describing a "first among equals" relationship. However, in the case of God, the title describes a unique Being who is greater in every respect than any earthly ruler; who has total authority over all of them; who is the One from whom any of those rulers (no matter how great their earthly authority might be) derive their own status; and whose will alone determines how long any of those earthly rulers will retain their position.

God is given the title "King of kings." Why? The very beginning of the Bible gives a detailed account of God creating the heavens and earth. All of nature, animals, birds and other creatures – and finally mankind – came to life at His command. Scripture goes on to celebrate the wonderful fact that nothing God created can ever be greater than He is.

“But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal” (Job 33:12). HA
