If you are a believer, then at the moment you became a believer the the Holy Spirit took up residence in your body.

Jesus told his disciples, after the crucifixion and resurrection, to wait in Jerusalem to receive the Holy Spirit. (Acts1:4,8). The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the trinitarian God.

What is the Holy Spirit's function in the believer? He is there to teach us "all things" (John 14:26). He is also the One who reminds of what Jesus said, and for us it is in His Word (the Bible). The Spirit also is the believer’s conscience toward our sanctification (to be set apart for God). That means that He is conscious of our deeds, good or bad, and will most certainly remind us of deeds that are repugnant to God; and He encourages and empowers us to correct our behavior.

Because the Holy Spirit is equal in power and authority to God the Father, we need to pay close attention to what He says to us, and realize that Someone who is equal to God the Father in all ways has taken up residence in the believers life.

Since it would be impossible for Jesus in His bodily form to actually reside in one or all believers, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to take His place. It’s a great honor for us to have the Holy Spirit's Presence in our lives. We need to honor and respect that fact and act accordingly.
