David knew Jesus the Messiah very well even before His first coming as this Psalm is all about Jesus. The prophecy in Psalms (Ps. 16:5-11, fulfilled in the life, death, resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus Christ. The personal pronouns of Ps. 16:5-11 refer to the Messiah. Some even think that those of Ps. 16:1-4 refer to Him, but in all scriptures of double reference two persons must be understood. It is difficult to tell just where David is referred to and where the Messiah is exclusively meant. The general rule to follow is: take those things that could refer to David as referring to him, and those that could only refer to the Messiah as referring to Him. What could refer to both, should be taken as doing so. For example, Ps. 16:5-7 could refer to both David and the Messiah, but Ps. 16:8-10 could only refer to the Messiah for they are fulfilled in Him (Acts 2:25-28; 13:35).

❖ Twenty References to the Messiah
➊ The Lord is the portion of My inheritance, or share in life (Ps. 16:5). This figure is taken from the idea of the general division of the promised land. The tribe of Levi had no inheritance, but were to live off the parts of the offerings which fell to the share of divine service. God Himself is called their share (Dt. 10:9; 18:1-2). All Israelites were to be a kingdom of priests to God (Ex. 19:6 Jer. 10:16).
➋ The Lord is the portion of My cup (Ps. 16:5). A figure of salvation or deliverance (Mt. 20:22).
➌ God maintains that which has fallen to Me by lot (Ps. 16:5). Another allusion to the division of the promised land. The Messiah's lot was the redemption of the race (Heb. 2:9-15).
➍ The lines are fallen unto Me in pleasant places (Ps. 16:6)--alluding to the division of the promised land.
➎ I have a goodly heritage (Ps. 16:6). Again, a reference to dividing the promised land. The Messiah's heritage was the redemption of men and the restoration of the earth to God (Eph. 1:10; Rev. 21-22).
➏ I will bless the Lord (Ps. 16:7).
➐ God has given Me counsel (Ps. 16:7; Isa. 50:4; Lk. 2:40,52).
➑ My reins (thoughts) instruct Me in the night (Ps. 16:7; 1:2).
➒ The Lord is ever before Me (Ps. 16:8).
➓ He is at My right hand; i.e., I have His constant presence and support (Ps. 16:8).
⓫ I shall not be moved (Ps. 16:8; 125:1).
⓬ My heart is glad (Ps. 16:9; Heb. 12:2).
⓭ My glory (tongue) rejoiceth (Ps. 16:9; Acts 2:26).
⓮ My flesh shall rest in hope, because it shall be resurrected (Ps. 16:9; Acts 2:27).
⓯ God will not leave My soul in hell (she'owl (H7585), Ps. 16:10; Mt. 12:40; see notes, Eph. 4:8-10, and Where Are the Dead?.
⓰ My body will not be left to suffer corruption in the grave (Ps. 16:10; Acts 2:25-29).
⓱ I am God's Holy One; i.e., I am not the Father or the only person in the Godhead (Ps. 16:10; see The Trinity).
⓲ God will show Me the path of life; i.e., I will be the first to be raised from the dead to immortality (Ps. 16:11; 1Cor. 15:20-23). Because of this, I shall be able to lead others out of death.
⓳ Fullness of joy is in God's presence so I look forward to eternal happiness (Ps. 16:11; Heb. 12:2).
⓴ I will also have eternal pleasures with God (Ps. 16:11).

David has an intimate relationship with God and he knows where his trust lies. David knows God will protect him. He is a warrior, not only in the physical but spiritual, also, and he is affirming who he is and what is true. I believe this is how we, as believers. Should think, be and do. This is a good psalm to follow if you ever forget who you are.

We can learn about DAVID'S SECURITY from Psalm16:1-7. 

His confidence is shown in Psalm 16:1-2, 5-7 where he explains that he finds security in the Lord. How?

First, he says that the Lord protects him (Ps 16:1). 

16:1 "Michtam of David. Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust."

Next, he affirms that the Lord provides for him (Ps 16:2, 5-7). 

Psalm 16:2 2I say to the LORD, "You are my LORD; apart from you I have no good thing."

Psalm 16:5-7 5 "LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. 6The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me."

New International Version

His companions (Ps 16:3): David looks up to the godly of the land. 

Berean Study Bible:
"As for the saints in the land, they are the excellence in whom all my delight resides."

David's commitment or vow is this (Ps 16:4): David vows never to offer sacrifices to idols. Psalm 16:4 states, "Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips."
