To me, mountains or mountainsides in the Bible have three symbolisms: as sources of strength (based on the rugged nature of their terrain); as places of refuge, solitude, or seclusion (to which those who are seeking those states may go); and as symbols of holiness (based on their elevation or altitude placing them figuratively "closer" to God).
Good question, Brian! According to the Net Bible the actual term, "mountainside," is rare, only occurring 14 times in different translations, mainly the NIV and the NLT. In the Bible, a mountainside often marks a place of quiet reflection, prayer, or teaching. Jesus frequently went there to be alone with God or to instruct His disciples (e.g., Matthew 14:23; Luke 6:12; Matthew 5:1). In poetic passages like Song of Songs 2:14, it suggests intimacy and safety, highlighting its symbolic role as a space for connection with God and others. These 3 are only a sampling. For all the occurrences see: John 6:3 – NET Bible Matthew 8:1 – NIV, NLT Matthew 5:1 – NIV, NLT Mark 6:46 – NIV, NLT Exodus 24:9 – NIV, NLT Mark 3:13 – NIV, NLT Matthew 14:23 – NIV, NLT Matthew 15:29 – NIV, NLT Luke 6:12 – NIV, NLT John 6:15 – NET Bible Mark 9:9 – NIV, NLT 2 Kings 6:17 – NIV, NLT Song of Songs 2:14 – NIV Zechariah 11:2 – AMP
