What is the significance of the earthquake and the rock split in Matthew 27:51?

To me, the earthquake and the rocks splitting that occurred when Christ died were not significant of themselves, but were necessary accompaniments/causes or emphatic by-products of the splitting of the veil in the temple mentioned in the same verse, which represented Christ's atoning death removing the separation that existed between God and humanity caused by unforgiven sin.
