God is both the original and ultimate manifestation of righteousness. He is righteous by His very nature. He also created humans in His image to have a unique fellowship with Him, based on humans voluntarily (rather than by compulsion) living in that same state of righteousness.

Human sin broke that fellowship, but God still wants humans to strive for that original state. He gave the Law to Israel to tell them how they could go about it. Also, as Paul said, He wrote the Law on the heart of every human (Romans 2:14-15).

When humans (despite their sin) seek to attain righteousness by delighting in obedience to God -- or, in the case of Christians, in availing themselves of the reconciliation to God that He made possible through faith in Christ's atoning death and resurrection for the forgiveness of their sins, which imputes Christ's perfect righteousness to them -- it pleases God as well, and influences Him to bless them by granting the requests that they make of Him. (Jesus Himself indicated this in Matthew 7:7-11.)

When we trust Jesus as our savior He imputes His perfect righteousness to us apart from works. Romans 4:6. Romans 4:7-8 Blessed is the man whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 

After we are saved we can have practical righteousness for rewards in heaven. What is practical righteousness? The golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Jesus said if we do that we have fulfilled the law and the prophets. 

When we trust Jesus as our savior we have perfect righteousness without which no one will see God. 

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. 

Where is boasting then? Romans 3:26-28 For He is the just and the justifier of them that believe in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? By the law of works? Nay, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 

John 6:40 Is the will of God for the free gift of eternal life. And this is the will of Him who sent me, that all that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day. Romans 11:6 All grace, no works. Our works can not save sinners. Only Jesus finished work on the cross can save us sinners.
